Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a skilled communication aimed at directing your attention in a way that helps bring about changes in some perceptions, sensations, feelings, thoughts and behaviours.

In a typical hypnotherapy session the hypnotherapist will discuss your goals with you and will decide on the best approach.

Hypnotherapy and Coaching can be combined to produce powerful results.

Hypnotherapy has been found to be particularly helpful for those seeking relief from a range of problems when combined with the willpower and motivation that can be generated through Coaching.

Hypnotherapy is commonly used in a number of areas which include…

  • Relieving anxiety
  • Aiding sleeping
  • Behavioural change
  • Habit breaking (e.g. smoking)
  • Minor skin conditions (those exacerbated by stress)
  • Alleviating stress
  • Building confidence
  • Sports performance
  • Confidence in Public Speaking

If you think hypnotherapy may be appropriate for you, call us for an initial consultation and we will advise you on the best approach for you.

How does Hypnotherapy Work?

People invariably have problems because of learned limitations, we become caught in unhelpful frames of reference and belief systems that do not permit us to explore and utilise our own abilities to best advantage.

Hypnotherapists use a trance state as a means of focusing and amplifying communication, communicating directly with the unconscious whilst suspending and bypassing normal, conscious limitations.

Trance is an altered state of awareness that differs from the ordinary (waking) state. In the therapeutic sense, this is generally an inner-directed state where the person’s awareness becomes more and more focused on their internal thoughts, processes or sensations.

“Therapeutic trance is a period during which patients are able to break out of their limited frameworks and belief systems so they can experience other patterns of functioning within themselves.” ~ Milton Erickson

Research shows that a “hypnotic” trance is an accessing of the REM state. This is the state of mind where we update patterns of behaviour. In this state, the thinking mind’s perceived limitations of those unhelpful habitual frames of reference and beliefs are temporarily bypassed so that clients can be receptive to new patterns, associations and modes of mental functioning that are more conducive to problem solving.

And what is more, we are all expert at entering a trance state! It is a natural state that you enter several times a day while you daydream, exercise, or focus intently on a problem at work. It follows therefore that everyone has practice of entering (and waking from) trance states several times a day! Any time where your attention is not on your present experience can be thought of as a trance.

Coaching and Hypnotherapy

We use hypnotherapy and coaching together because we believe that this offers a more holistic approach than hypnotherapy alone. with this approach we can combine the conscious mind’s more logical, sequential, planning abilities with the creative and intuitive unconscious in order to solve problems and achieve goals.

We take the view that if you could have thought your way out of a problem, or figured out a way to get what you want, you would have done it already! There is something missing – and in our experience that missing piece is often found by exploring a different place.

Put another way – if we think of our minds as an iceberg, with our conscious, thinking mind being the part visible above the surface, hypnotherapy allows us to go below the surface to the vast storehouse of knowledge, wisdom, creativity and learning of our unconscious mind.
