Change What You Do to Get a Different Result

Or, to put it another way – if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always had.  If you want change, you have to make a change!

Change habits

Many of us want our lives to be different but are resistant to making any changes.  We may want to be fitter or healthier, but do not change our eating habits or take up exercise to bring about the desired result.  Likewise many businesses announce that they want to make changes, maybe to boost profits or increase productivity but then seem reluctant to change their business processes.

Wanting a change is not enough – we have to take action.

Einstein is credited with saying that a definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.  Yet many of us exhibit signs of this “insanity” on a daily basis.  At home it may manifest in the way we communicate with our families –  hoping that maybe one day shouting at the sulky/stroppy teenager may get him or her to co-operate, but are you prepared to wait that long?  At work we may feel overloaded or stressed and yet take no action to change the way we manage our time, delegate more or take steps to ameliorate the feelings of stress.

So the key is to know what you want and then do something different – monitor the results and ask “is this change moving me closer to my goal?” If the answer is “yes”, keep doing it and ask “what else could I now do to bring success even closer?”. If the answer is “no” try something else.

In NLP we talk about the TOTE principle (Test-operate-test-exit).  Identify what you are going to do differently, do it, then check the results, keep changing the behaviour and checking the results until you have achieved your desired outcome, then exit the loop.

Learn from your experience of doing something differently, ask yourself “what is the learning?”.  If at first you don’t succeed, try again – but differently
